Workshops: Training Sessions Offered

All Training Sessions are available at no cost to your organization. If you are interested in any of the below sessions, contact the Aboriginal Health Advocacy Developer in your region to schedule a training session.

As the host organization it is appreciated if you assist the Trainer in the planning of the training. You will be responsible to gather the participants for the training, and let the Trainer know how many people will be attending.

All training sessions include interactive activities and workshop handouts.

  • The College of Physicians and Surgeons - The Complaints Process
    The front line worker will gain a basic understanding of the Regulated Health Professions Act and knowledge of the formal complaints process for the C.P.S.O. The worker will become familiar with the appeals process to the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board and aware of alternative complaint avenues. (half day)

  • Advocacy for Front Line Workers
    Reviews the various types of advocacy, including the skills and attitudes required to be an effective advocate. The worker will gain useful information and tools on how and when to advocate on behalf of their client.
    (half day)

  • Developing Cultural Presentations
    Front line workers will gain the information and skills to assist them in the development and presentation of a cultural awareness workshop aimed at ‘mainstream’ service providers. (1 day)

  • Meeting the Needs of Aboriginal People Living With HIV/AIDS
    Workers will understand the patterns of HIV infection and AIDS among Aboriginal people. Focus is not on education about HIV/AIDS, rather it will assist workers in addressing the programming/service needs of clients infected/affected by HIV/AIDS. The workshop also touches on community protocol development, including the importance of confidentiality. (1day)

  • Navigating the Conflict Highway
    Participants will discuss the general nature of conflict and common strategies used to resolve it, including an opportunity to examine and practice principled negotiation. Participants will gain an awareness about how conflict was handled from a cultural perspective. (1day)

  • Breaking the Communication Barrier
    Promotes an understanding of the elements of communication. The workshop allows for an increase in awareness about the components of effective communication through a discussion of common roadblocks and an opportunity to participate in exercises to strategically overcome these. (half day)

  • Mental Health Services and Mental Health Act
    Front line workers will gain an understanding of the current mental health status of Aboriginal peoples and learn about some avenues of redress. Workshop participants will receive Aboriginal specific information regarding the mental health system, resources and related services. (half day)

  • Traditional Health: A Guided Discussion on Access and Issues
    To increase the knowledge of service providers with regards to the development of traditional health programs and an increased understanding of the Aboriginal traditional concept of health and how to access these types of programs/services for Aboriginal clients. (1 day)

  • Workshops Currently Under Development: Youth Sexual Health - Peer Train the Trainer
