- History -

With the support of interested community members and the Moosonee Metis Association, the Moosonee Friendship Centre was established. The first formal Board meeting was attended by five people in 1981, and in 1982 the Centre was incorporated. The Moosonee Centre, located in a semi-isolated community across from Moose Factory Reserve and accessible only by rail or air, has grown over the years to meet community needs. There are no major industries with the exception of the public sector so the needs of the our members are high with little resources to provide for them. The Friendship Centre is counted on for everything from feeding the impoverished to supporting families in need, to providing children after school activities in a safe environment. We try our best, and with the support of others we are sure we can succeed at making the lives of our membership a little better. The Friendship Centre currently provides the following programs: Aboriginal Family Support Program, Aboriginal Healing and Wellness, Child and Family Counsellor, Combined Courtworker Program, Literacy Basic Skills Program, Life Long Care, Oska’ye Oskawa’sis Prenatal Program, and the Youth Centre.
