- History -

The N'Amerind Friendship Centre was incorporated on April 20, 1967 although operations began a few years before incorporation. The Centre simply grew out of a need for Native people to associate with each other. Through the years, the organization has grown in the following ways: Ownership of existing facilities and attendant property. Noted as London's primary urban Native institution, Implementation of social and recreational services, as well as educational and cultural activities. The following is the Friendship Centre’s list of programs and services currently being offered: Community Development, Community Liaison, Family and Adult Courtworkers, Li'l Beavers, Sweetgrass Child Care Centre, Sweetgrass Secondary School, Family Support Program, Alcohol Prevention Program, Life Long Care Program, N'Amerind Housing Corporation, Native Employment Counsellor, Employment Outreach Program and Drop In Centre. The Friendship Centre’s upcoming project is for a 20 unit seniors housing, as well as renovations to current facility to allow for expansion in programs. The Friendship Centre provides annual community events such as: Community picnic, Halloween Party, Children's Christmas Party, Seniors Christmas Party, Traditional Gathering, Community feasts, Annual Art Festival, Self defense classes, Dance Classes, Oneida language classes and Ojibwe language classes.
