The Parry Sound Friendship Centre began in September 1966 and was incorporated on February 2, 1967. The following were the founding Board members: James Wilson, James C. Ludford, Irving H. Bansfield, Elizabeth Green, Dora Pegahmagabow, Duncan Pegahmagabow, Verna George, Joyce Tabobondung, Florence King, Barbara Contin, Leslie Tabobondung, Allan King, Flora Tabobondung, Paul Tabobondung and Brenda Judge. This Friendship Centre not only services the town of Parry Sound, but the surrounding six First Nations as well (Wahta First Nation, Moose Deer Point First Nation, Wasaukasing First Nation, Shawanaga First Nation, Magnetawan First Nation and Henvey Inlet First Nation). This service area encompasses 160 kilometres. The Friendship Centre currently offers Native Employment Counselling Services, Li'l Beavers Programme that operates both from the Friendship Centre as well as delivery on various First Nations, a Youth Programme (this programme also operates from the Friendship Centre , as well as on various First Nations), a Community Development Programme, and Aboriginal Family Support Program and a Criminal and Family Courtworker Programme. Events, which are held weekly, include: an Aboriginal Parenting Programme, Bingos, Sewing Circle, and Lunches twice a week. Ojibway Language, Drumming, Outfit making classes. As well, special events are planned throughout the year. Some of these special events have included: and Elder's Board Cruise, Special theme Elder's luncheons, Children's theme parties and plays.
