- History -

On June 19, 1973, the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre was formally incorporated as a non-profit charitable organization. Much growth and prosperity has taken place over the past sixteen years. We presently have a full time staff of twelve (12) and have approximately 50 people per year on various programs and projects. Our administrative source of funding continues to be Heritage Canada with a good deal of funding coming from other government sources such as Ministry of Community and Social Services, Skill Development, Employment and Immigration Canada, Attorney General as well as other sources that are identified from time to time. Our Centre is run by a volunteer Board of Directors who number nine and "administer the affairs" of the Corporation. Their legal responsibilities are spelled out in our constitution. An Executive Director was hired to tend to the "day to day" business affairs of the operation. Much communication was channeled via the Executive Director and staff members. We have annual community priorities developed through our Annual General Meeting and the Board of Directors are instrumental in developing long and short range goals from these objectives. Our Centre through the course of our history has gained and maintained credibility in the Native and non-Native sector at large. We are constantly growing and expanding our operations to meet the ever changing and growing needs of the native community. Services provided include: Native Community Development Program, Native Criminal Courtwork Program, Li'l Beavers Program, Native Literacy Program, Employment/Training Needs Program, Youth Initiative Program, Aboriginal Alcohol and Drug Worker Program and Family Support Worker.
