Student Nutrition Programme

Goals & Objectives

The Student Nutrition Programme is designed to deliver nutritious food through meal programmes to children and youth every day that Akwe:go and Wasa-Nabin programmes take place across the province. The Student Nutrition Programme provides children and youth with healthy nutritious snacks and meals so each child and youth is well nourished and ready to learn.

Programme Summary

The Student Nutrition Programme is provided and open to every child and youth taking part in the Akwe:go and/or Wasa-Nabin programmes regardless of their family's ability to contribute financially.

What is unique about this programme is that the community is encouraged to participate in the design and implementation of the meal programmes with the guarantee that the Nutrition Guidelines and public health standards are being followed.

Focus on Success

"'The Kids Can Cook' programme takes place once a year. There is space for five children to participate. The children learn to cook and are also able to work on their math and reading skills thru measuring items for their recipes. The cooking programme has also helped with homework. One parent came up to the office and stated that their child recognized another child from the programme in the mall and went over to say, "hi". This was not normal for her child. The mother saw this as positive behaviour as her daughter has FASD and usually doesn't remember people."

Development

There were initial concerns with providing the Monthly Reports from Workers across the province when the programme was initially launched. After a year in operation, it appears that Friendship Centres are now able to provide Monthly Reports with little to no issues.
